Refrigerator odor takes several forms. They may arise from milk you didn’t toss before leaving on vacation. Ever forgot a potato at the base of a vegetable bin? Worst you can imagine. Some odors are more assaulting than others. But it’s never a good idea to let odors remain because they can spread in each corner of the fridge and can be difficult to remove.
But with some patience and perseverance, you can clear the foul odor. Here’s a step-by-step guide from Kaam Ke Bande.
Even if you identify the offensive item, you have to clear all the items from the refrigerator. In case, you have another fridge, you can put your groceries there. If the odor occurs as a result of a power outage, do not hit any chance onto the food that may harm. A refrigerator keeps your food safe at required temperatures for about 6 hours.
Handwash Shelves And Drawers
Take the shelves, bins, drawers, ice trays, and all other components. Wash them with hot, and soapy water. For instance, for common refrigerator smells, mix a tablespoon of sanitizing solution of liquid chlorine bleach per gallon of water. Use this solution to wipe the bins and shelves. Then rinse in plain water and air dry.
Purify The Interior
Now, get ready to wash the refrigerator from inside. To wash refrigerator from inside, we recommend a solution of 1 cup baking soda per gallon of water. Pour inside the refrigerator with a sponge soaked in the solution. For creamy food, submerse a damp sponge in baking powder and apply a little grease. Stay away from harmful cleaners, which can blemish the interior of the fridge.
Air Out Refrigerator Odor
So now, patience is tested. For good results, one should unplug the refrigerator & the door should be left open, and air it out at least for a day. If the refrigerator smells continuous, pour down the interior repeatedly with the baking soda solution and air it out for another day.
Clean the Evaporator
If the smell is lasting that just won’t go, there are chances that refrigerator odor has permeated the evaporator coil that produces cold air for the refrigerator. The coil & the fan that dispenses the air, are generally located on the backside of the freezer.
To deep clean the evaporator, you can start by clearing all the screws that anchor the panel. Next, disconnect the plug from the electronic controls. Remove and wash the panel. You can use a spray bottle to spread warm and soapy water to the coils. Trapping the dirty water runoff with an old rag; continue the process with fresh water to rinse. Air-dry the coil completely before substituting the panel.
This job is generally easier since you have enough of room to move in. But you must be able to access and clean the evaporator on any refrigerator; you can check the user’s manual for instructions.
In case, you have a new refrigerator with dual evaporators, you will see two sets of coils—one for the freezer and another for the fridge. But if the odor is only in the fresh food compartment, you only have to clean that coil.
